David Shepherd The Artist and his Railways
29/07/2024
New Book released on August 15th 2024
I am honoured that my portrait of wildlife artist David Shepherd has been chosen for the cover of a new book published by Amberley Publications on August 15th 2024.
The artist and conservationist David Shepherd had a lifelong interest in railways. They were not only the subject of many of his paintings, but he also actively supported railway preservation in the UK and abroad. He was instrumental in setting up the East Somerset Railway and owned a number of steam locomotives, the most famous of which were Class 9F Black Prince, later sold to the North Norfolk Railway, and BR 4MT The Green Knight, later sold to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. In this new book J. C. Jeremy Hobson, professional author and David Shepherd’s youngest son-in-law, has drawn on family archives, paintings, drawings and photographs, private diaries and reminiscences to create a unique portrait of a remarkable man’s lifelong interest in railways with examples of his stunning paintings of steam locomotives, showing these magnificent machines in their full working glory.
I am indebted to Jeremy Hobson for asking me for images for the book and for my personal memories of David when I worked closely with him during the 1980’s on the creation of an audio visual production telling the story of his romance with steam and the history of the East Somerset Railway.
Jeremy Hobson will be signing copies of the book at the East Somerset Railway on 15th August 2024. Also on this date David's daughter Mandy will be opening the new David Shepherd Discovery Centre. An old railway carriage, transformed into a 1970s living room with displays of David's prints and fascinating artefacts. A display of the work of The David Shepherd Foundation, set up in 1984 to prevent wildlife crime and protect endangered species in Africa and Asia forms part of the exhibition.
I was delighted to be presented with a signed copy of Jeremy's book at the East Somerset Railway, Cranmore on 15th August
This new book by Jeremy Hobson is now available direct from Amberley Publications
