Dorset Life - The Dorset Magazine

The End of an Era
It is certainly a sign of the modern times in which we live when so many small independent businesses have to cease trading despite offering a significant and important contribution to the community.
Such is the case with Dorset Life – The Dorset Magazine which ceased trading after the publication of the June 2023 issue.
The magazine was founded in 1968 by Rodney Legg who later passed it on to John Newth who developed it into the highly successful publication Dorset readers have enjoyed for many years since the late 1980s.
It became a tremendous opportunity for local photographers like myself who were regularly asked to provide images for both covers and centre-spreads featuring Dorset’s landscapes, both countryside and coast.
One shot of mine featured Canford School in Winter, viewed across the Stour water meadows. Following publication as a centre-spread John Newth was contacted by Canford Scool for my contact details and this led to a commission from Canford School to photograph the school's landscaped grounds, architecture and famous arboretum for seven years.
Being part of the ‘Three Rogers’ the late Roger Holman, myself and writer, the late Roger Guttridge all provided images and regular articles for the magazine.
I will always remain extremely grateful to John Newth as Editor, Lisa Richards as Publisher & Managing Director and Bryony O’Hara (Accounts and Administration) for their excellent service and opportunities over the years.
